As a child, did you ever dream of far-off places, enchanting lands full of mystery and adventure? Most of us probably did, being raised with fairy tales and Disney movies. Did you know you could open your child’s eyes up to real adventure in real far-off lands?
Giving your child the gift of travel is quite possibly one of the best things you can give them. Whether you stay within the States or take off for Europe or Asia, showing your kids the world can open their minds and teach them to love and appreciate other people and cultures.
I am a firm believer in the idea that every person should travel out of the country at least once in their life. I may sound un-American, but we are too egotistical here, believing that we are superior to every other country. If everyone took the time to step out of their box and explore another culture, they would learn more about themselves and the world around them.
If we give our kids the opportunity for travel at a younger age, we can eradicate this superiority complex that is taught so young. Teaching our kids to accept and respect other cultures will be an asset to them as they grow as our world becomes increasingly smaller. Many of our children will be working, in some capacity, with international organizations and having travel experience can give them an advantage in the workplace.
I know many of you may be thinking “travel is expensive, how can we afford to do this?” You don’t have to take a lot of trips to give your children this advantage. If all you can afford is one trip, then do it, it will be worth it. Its not the quantity of trips that matter, but the quality of the time spent together and the experiences you have while there.
The moral of the story is: Show your children the world. Open their minds to all the wonderful things out there and you will help them be more well-rounded people as they grow up.
